Two men
have been arrested by the Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security
and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with the corpse of a child whom they
were trying to bury in an abandoned borrow pit. The
two middle aged men were apprehended at Enyimba filling station close
to Ariaria international market in Osisioma area near Aba, while trying
to take the corpse whose identity is yet to be ascertained in big sack
for burial.
Speaking in Umuahia while parading the suspects, the state commandant of the NSCDC, Andy Dateer, said his men on a routine parade caught both men in possession of the dead body of a girl of about two year old in a sack.
Dateer said his men were attracted to the scene when the men started quarrelling with a man who was alleged to have brought them there in his car, “as people started gathering, the owner of the car zoomed off,” and his men arrested the two suspects.
Dateer said his men however succeeded in saving the suspects from being lynched by the angry mob, and that “if they had not been saved by his men the public would have lynched them and the society would not be able to know the mystery behind their devilish act.”
He added one of the suspects, when questioned, said the girl dead at Chineye Hospital in the town, but when they visited, a nurse who they met initially denied the claim, “but later recanted that she died there and tried to bribe my men with the sum of N20,000 which they refused”.
In an interview, one of the suspects who gave his name as Chibuike Anubuife who hails from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State said he saw the other man for the first time and he asked him to help him bury dead girl.
Anubuife said he was still discussing the logistics for the burial of the girl who was put in a sack before the men of the NSCDC swooped on them and arrested them, adding that he deals on clothing materials in the commercial city of Aba.
In his own reaction, the other suspect Jonathan Nwogu from Mgboko Umuola in Obingwa Council Area of the state said that a man approached him to help him bury the girl since he works at a borrow pit.
Nwogu explained that the man who approached him said the girl died in a private hospital and ran away when the NSCDC men arrested him, adding that he took them to the hospital known as Chineye hospital at Umule in Aba where the girl was alleged to have died.
The suspect said he was offered the sum of N2000 by the man who brought the dead body to enable him bury it, stressing that he has never met the man before that fateful day and cannot trace him. The NSCDC spokesman added that the suspects will be handed over to the police for proper investigation.
