Ex Lagos State governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu explains why he does not feel optimistic about celebrating Nigeria’s 54th Independence in an elaborate fashion.

Nigerians suffer from poor leadership, while the nation is yet to fulfill its potential, P.M. News reports with reference to Tinubu’s statement released today, September 29.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader started his address with the following words:

“We commemorate this Independence Day because the nation has survived despite its many challenges. We dare not celebrate because the nation has not flourished as it should. 54 years our national trek began with hope and promise, peace and unity.
Today, the nation staggers beneath the weight of trouble stacked upon problem multiplied by hardship. Peace and unity seem to have yielded the moment to violence and discord. We exist as a political unit on a map but we do not prosper as brothers and sisters in one nation, under one flag and pursuant to one accord.”

Insisting that he is proud to be a Nigerian, Tinubu noted however that “genuine patriotism should not induce blindness”and urged Nigerians to focus on the problems that remain unresolved.
Speaking about the upcoming celebrations of the October 1 Independence Day, the former governor said:

This is not a time for fake cheers and elation at the present state of things just because the calendar has touch this day. We need to use this hour soberly by taking stock of the obstacles mounting before us and of the hard direction in which we seem to be heading. I fear this direction, if further taken, will lead us not home but to an appointment with failure and national destitution. 

”

He also expressed his opinion on the dynamics of changes in the country and criticized the acting administration over hindering the country progress because of the adopted direction.

“Nigeria currently is saddled with the reprobate leadership Awo, Zik, Sardauna and Tafawa Belewa feared. We have entered unchartered territory not so much because we are expanding the outer bounds of national progress. We traverse such ground because this government leads us into places where angles fear to tread and where sensible man should not go.
“Never has an elected government in Nigeria employed religion as a tool to divide the people, setting Nigerian brother against brother in a manner that allows this administration to function at the basest level of governance while seeking to establish a political domination that seeks no greater purpose than its self perpetuation. Our nation was supposed to advance, year by year, toward greater democracy. Instead, we rush into the pit of arbitrary, imperious rule that smacks of despotism.”

Tinubu also enumerated Nigeria’s problems and challenges concluding that those were not reasons for celebration, but the “troubling signals” that should awake the nation.

“The incessant attempts to stigmatize and physically intimidate a peaceful political opposition and the militarization of elections are features of a perverse democracy, a democracy run at gun-point and with a swift and eager trigger, Brazen assaults on the judiciary, the flippant and frequent violation of the constitution and the rule of law, and the elevation of corruption to making it a new and perhaps the strongest arm of government are the instruments that now shape our nation. These things are not the fare of celebration. They are the impetus for political reform and change.”

In his statement Tinubu said the 16 years of ruling by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pulled the country back adding that “the longer they rule, the less benefit the people derive”.
He lamented over the politics which causes division of people saying that the flourishing can be reached only through unity.

“It is accomplished by honoring the principles of democratic good governance and economic justice. It is done by persuading the people they are better off as one instead of better off tearing at each other’s throats.”
“Governance is about trust. And this government is not even trusted by itself. That is why it does nothing except feed itself. This is not the road for a better Nigeria. We must proceed from this 54th anniversary to embark on a common sense revolution that brings about progressive change for the benefit of most of our country men and women, our youth and the vulnerable among us.”

Thus, the speaker concluded with the idea that if Nigerians want to make a step forward, they should be ready for a change in order to celebrate the “Independence Day we can and should celebrate.”

President Goodluck Jonathan today placed the designer of the National Flag, Mr Taiwo Akinkunmi, on a lifetime salary as Special Assistant to the President.
The president gave the directive today in Abuja after conferring national honour awards on 313 distinguished Nigerians.
The announcement is coming in days before the 54th independence day anniversary celebration.
Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi born on 10th May 1936 in Ibadan, was honored with officer of the order of Federal Republic (OFR) at the conference center Abuja; He was decorated by His Excellency Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR).
He is married with one wife and kids.

 After five years together, actress Ini Edo's marriage to her US based husband Philip Ehiagwina has crashed. The couple who lived separately for most of their marriage decided to formally split in early August. There are reports that Ini's people have even returned the bride price Philip paid in 2008.

Ini has since removed her husband's name from her social media accounts and she also removed wife from her bio on instagram. Her bio used to read - actress and wife...but wife is no longer there. A source that I spoke with said they have been having problems for quite a while because of trust issues before they decided to finally end their marriage. They have no children together.

Archaeologists excavating the site of a long-lost chapel in the countryside of Leicestershire, England unearthed the skeletons of a couple who appear to have been buried together holding hands.

This is the adorable moment a 3 year old boy ran into the arms of his mother after not seeing her for months as she and other soldiers stood in line waiting to finally be dismissed so they could re-unite with their families after serving in Afghanistan for 9 months. 

As soldiers stood in line, 3 year old Cooper Waldvogel ignored the strict military protocol, ran up to the troops and into his mother's arms, who was so happy to scoop him up. Other soldiers tried to keep straight faces because they'd been ordered not to interact with family members as they stood in line, but they later said it was the most adorable thing they'd ever seen. Pres. Jonathan lacks the experience to lead Nigeria- Atiku Abubakar says

 

 Former Vice President and APC presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar said in an interview with AFP today that President Jonathan lacks the experience to lead Nigeria, saying it's the reason Boko Haram activities has been on the increase.

"This insurgency shouldn’t have lasted even six months. Within weeks, we (Obasanjo and I) crushed it because we did not neglect military training and, of course, we did not lack the leadership and the capacity to take decisions. I told Nigerians that he [Jonathan] did not have the capacity; he didn’t have the experience. He didn’t have anything and yet they gave him the chance, the opportunity. And they can now see the chance and the opportunity they gave him. Of course, I’m more experienced than he is. I believe my capacity cannot be compared with his, in all respect.” he said

A young student in a university in China, who hid her pregnancy throughout, gave birth to a baby girl inside a toilet pipe, hoping the baby would flush down the pipe. Fortunately the pipe wasn't wide enough to take the baby down and so her body became wedged a short way down the pipe. The baby immediately started crying and the new mum fled. Fortunately, the baby's cries was loud enough to attract the attention of other students who immediately raised an alarm.

Rescue operation at Synagogue Church of All Nations site ended today September 18th. NEMA officials say they are convinced that there are no more bodies at the site. The death toll has been put at 80. NEMA says the next phase is for proper identification and retrieval of the bodies by families of the victims.

Nigeria Is Now Free From The Deadly Disease (Ebola) – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that Nigeria is free of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease which has claimed seven lives in the past weeks.
Jonathan addressing State House journalists in Abuja yesterday said nobody has Ebola in the country at the moment.
He said all those who hitherto had the symptoms of the virus had recovered.
Jonathan, however, noted that the possibility of recording the Ebola in Nigeria again could not be ruled out as long as it continued to ravage Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
He said the likelihood that someone like Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer who imported the virus to Nigeria in July could also not be foreclosed, according to report from Daily Trust “Presently, there is no case of Ebola in Nigeria.

Ex-minister thrown into rubbish bin by angry mob (photos)

 

It's Ukrainian politics so I don't care much for the details..:-).. but a former minister named Vitaly Zhuravsky was attacked yesterday morning September 16th by an angry mob as he walked past a crowd outside the parliament building in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital.  

The minister was grabbed by the screaming mob and bundled head first into the half full rubbish bin and they proceeded to pelt him with the rubbish, pour water on him and hit him on the head with a car tyre. They are mad at him and other lawmakers because of Ukraine's recent trade pact with EU. See photos after the cut...

The Woman Who Allegedly Raped A Man In His Own Home

26-year-old Chantae Gilman has been charged with second-degree rape by a Seattle prosecutor after a man reportedly awoke from deep sleep from his bed and found her on top of him.
The alleged sexual crime took place over a year ago, but due to a recent DNA test, prosecutors  were led to file charges against Gilman, reports Q13 Fox.

The unidentified, 31-year-old man claimed that he awoke at 2 a.m. on June 17, 2013 and saw Gilman on him and having sexual intercourse with him. He said that he told the suspect to get off, but she refused and told him to be quiet. He eventually broke free from beneath her pushed her and out of the apartment.

 The victim alleged that he had slept off, following a night of partying and a “long day.” He didn’t know Gilman personally but recognized her as a “drug user in the area,”.

A local hospital in the area performed a sexual assault examination later in the day and collected DNA which matched Gilman’s this year.
Gilman spoke to the police and claimed she didn’t remember the incident or ever being in his home. She described herself as mentally ill.
Seattle police told KOMO-TV that an arrest of a female rapist is unusual.
“From a statistical standpoint, yes, it is atypical to have a female aggressor,” SPD Det. Drew Fowler told the station. “But we work to hold all people responsible for their actions. The law is specifically written to be gender-equitable and we will charge anybody with a crime that they’ve committed.”
Let it be noted that Gilman is a mother of four who is eight months pregnant with her fifth child, said Elwin Hartfield, a friend who answered the door at her last known address in Seattle. Hartfield said Gilman was in treatment in Eastern Washington, and that she’d been treated for mental health issues and drug abuse in the past.

Students Of University of Ilorin To Undergo Ebola Screening

Don’t bring Ebola into our school is the message University of Ilorin Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul Ganiyu Ambali is passing by subjecting all students to screening.
Ambali stated this on Monday while unveiling preventive kits worth N1.2 million at the university’s health centre.
“The procurement of the anti-Ebola kits is part of the university’s preparedness to tackle the epidemic headlong,” the vice chancellor said.
The kits, he said, included face masks, boots, hand gloves, automatic soap dispenser, infrared thermometer and disposable bed spreads.
The vice-chancellor commended members of the institution’s Ebola Response Committee for their foresight and prompt response.
Ambali, however, charged the university’s health workers to be alert and follow laid down procedures in the case of an outbreak.

Kanye West Hospitalized In Australia

Kanye West was reportedly hospitalized yesterday for an emergency MRI.
According to Woman’s Day magazine, a witness, Loraine Kelly, said she saw the 37-year-old entertainer being brought in to Melbourne’s Epworth Hospital in Richmond for an emergency MRI just after 2pm on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old had one side of his face covered as he was rushed through the back entrance, surrounded by high security. Nurses were forced to ask patients to move out of the waiting room and consulting rooms so Kanye, who is in Australia for his high-energy Yeezus tour, could be treated privately.
Despite his scare, Kanye later performed to a packed crowed at Rod Laver Arena following his release from hospital sometime after 4.30pm.
